RESEARCH - Function of a music video

    FUNCTION OF A MUSIC VIDEO

To start off a music video ismusic video is a videotaped performance of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

There are a few functions of a music video,
One of the functions are to make it easier for the audience to visualise and understand the lyrics of the song ,keeping in mind this is for music videos that are classified as amplification.

The main function of a music video is to promote the artist, it helps get the artists song out there which leads to more views and recognition.this is good for the artist as they can build themselves a brand and earn reputation aswell as increasing the amount of fans they have.Aswell as promoting an artist a music video is used to make the record label a lot of money.

Sometimes a music video is used it express the views of a artist and what they think about the world or specific subjects.
Micheal Jackson used his music videos to evoke emotion on the audience and to get them to think about themselves.

Different genres have different purposes, an example of this is Dubstep, in dubstep a music video is used to entatain the audience mainly therefore the artist doesnt have to be shown in the video as the most importnt factor is the music.

Music videos are also used for representation,an example of this is rihanna , her unique selling point is representing herself as a sex object.

REFLECTING BACK - Technical skills developed during AS

                    Technical skills
Use of technology i have learnt to use in AS

  • Prezi
  • Videos
  • Final Cut Pro
  • Time toast
In AS i learnt how to use a camera properly aswell as how to edit a music video, editing involved adding effects, making clips shorter, adding music onto videos and making sure the sound is clear.

Camera:
- Different type of shots (long shot, medium shot, close up and extreme close ups.
- Different angles (birds eye view, point of view, low angle,180 degree rule, high angle and canted angle.
- Different shot movements (tilt, pan, handheld, steadi cam and crane

Sounds:
- Dietetic sounds (sounds that are in the video)
- Non-dietetic sounds (sounds that are not in ther video but have been added on during editing.
- Sound Effects
- Accent
- Motif
- Dialogue

Overall AS media has taught me the importance of planning and working as a team,by working as a team and planning what you want to you have a high chance of succeeding

REFLECTING BACK - What i learnt about music videos (June)

                        Music Video's

  • Music videos are used to promote the artist, the single or the album.
  • They show the conventions of the genre for example a hip hop music video will contain cars, houses, girls and drugs.
  • Entertains the audience.
  •  Sets the meanings of a song by the use of images.
  • Creates adapts or feeds into a "star image".

In order to edit our music video we will be using final cut pro which is a tool used to edit videos.Using final cut pro offers a wide variety of options when it comes to editing,

Research for Music Video: Good old Goodwin Summary

Here's just a short little clip on Mr. Andrew Goodwin's thoughts on pop music videos!

Andrew Goodwin's theory by essiem97 on GoAnimate

Research for Music Video: What is the FUNCTION of a music video?

Music videos usually rely on repetition through images. It is these images that allow the audience to identify which part of the song is considered to be the chorus and which part of the song is seen to be verses
Through this, the audience begins to have a general idea of what the genre of the song being played is as well as, begin to build expectations on what they would think they would see in future music videos.

The following things can make up the function of a music video:
  • Music videos normally builds up a climax or to a constant repetition before fading away.
  • The visualisation of the song doesn't always have to go along the lyrics of the song - it could go beyond its meaning.
  • The actual visual of the music video could encourage audiences to watch, which goes on to promote the song.
  • Videos could be used as other marketing tools to promote other media texts such a film
There are three types of relations between songs and videos:

1) ILLUSTRATION

This is where the video tells the story of the lyrics; dance is usually used to express the feelings/mood in the song.

2) AMPLIFICATION

This occurs when the video introduces new meaning that does not contradict with the lyrics but add layers of meaning.

3) DISJUNCTURE

This is where there is little connection between the lyrics and the video. The video can also contradict the lyrics of the song.

Features that the audience will be familiar with, when watching a music video include:
  • Pop videos often have recognisable features that the audience can connect with. E.g. Michael Jackson yelping or twirling in his videos.

  • Women can be seen to be objects in music videos - artists such as Rihanna and Katy Perry are known for doing this.

    • An important feature is that videos try and appeal to as wide range of an audience as possible without alienating the core target audience - The Weeknd and Drake does this whenever featuring in a track together by stating the phrase "OVOXO" (a way of joining two fan groups together and reaching out to a wide audience).

    • Videos that are written for films usually include images from the movie into the video. An example of this is Bruno Mars's song 'It Will Rain' which featured in one of the Twilight films.

Reflecting back on the AS Year: Those technical elements that witll aways stay with me.

The technical skills I learnt during AS year:
    Camera:
It is important, when filming, to keep note of the 180 degree rule it is when the interviewer will  be placed on the left hand side  of the screen and the interviewee will be seen on the right. As these individuals would be placed in these settings, it is important to take note of the invisible line. The camera can only be moved when the interviewer is on the left and interviewee is on the right.
It is important to position these individuals in these specific places as the audience is the camera. In order to allow viewers to follow a clip, then the 180 degree rule must be done successfully.

Last year I have been able to hold the camera and use the device to get the best outcomes. It is how I was able to recognise shots such as the following:
    Important shot types:

      EWS: Extreme Wide Shot

     WS - Wide Shot

    LS: Long Shot

    MS: Mid Shot

    MCU: Medium Close Up

    CU: Close Up

      ECU: Extreme Close Up

CA: Cutaway - a shot of something other than the current action

Cut In: part of the subject in detail

    Two Shot

      Over the shoulder

In addition, during filming it is extremely important to be organised as well as being able to communicate with one another in order to have a successful product.
    Editing:
Editing is the process of selecting and preparing written, visual, audible and filmmedia used to convey information.

An important feature while looking at the technical element of editing is match cuts.
A match cut can also be known as a match on action.
It helps to achieve a continuity editing because they make movement or action appear seamless so the viewer following the action rather than realizing an edit had just taken place.
Match cuts always use camera shots from a different camera angle or shot distance.
Editing allowed me to achieve edits such as:
    1.    Cross cut
    2.    Jump cuts
    3.    Slow/fast motion
    4.    Eyeline match
    5.    Etc

    Sound:
Within this technical element I've been able to identify the different sound types that are in media. They include:
Diegetic: 'sound on the set' - actor voices, a TV turned on, traffic noises etc
Non diegetic: sound added during post production - sound effects, pieces of music etc
Dialogue: simply the voices of the actors; things such as accents can be associated here.
    Other examples of sound:
      Voice over (non diegetic)
Synchronous sound (dialogue, non diegetic, diegetic)
      Foley sound (non diegetic)

      Sound bridge (non diegetic)

    ICT:
Throughout last year, I was exposed to numerous amount of softwares which allowed me to develop my technical skills. They include:
    1) Final Cut Pro
    2) Photoshop
    3)Prezi
    4) TimeToast
    5) Youtube
    6)Storyboard That
    And more!

AS Year Reflection | Memory Test

I like to think I have pretty good memory considering my friends have a memory of a fish. I remember in my last double lesson as a whole class we looked at:
    • Definition of a music video.
    • Main purpose of a music video.
    • Conventional Features of a music video and analysed a couple music videos one being Rizzle Kick - Lost Generation.
I looked into my AS media folder and found my sheets from that lesson, and the only main thing I forgot was Andrew Goodwin's theory.

Reflecting back on AS Year: What makes a music video...

The glitz, the glamour and flashing lights. Your possible favourite person in the world is on the screen, the only time where you get to have a little one to one catch up session with your favourite artists. Where your conversation lasts briefly three minutes, consists a verse, chorus and a bridge and you're more likely to hold the same discussion an hour later...

Of course this isn't an actual conversation! It's a music video; where you are the viewer and your favourite artists is the performer (it's what they're known for after all).

But yet... What actually make up a music video?

     The following definition is used:
A videotaped performed of a recorded popular song, usually accompanied by dancing and visual images interpreting the lyrics.

Though they can be seen to be a bit more complex; they can be both outrageous and  stylish, they don't usually follow the structure of editing and camera that you would see in TV dramas or the News.

Music videos have become an important part of the music industry and could be the vital reason behind artists' sales of their singles and album releases.

What is the main purpose of a music video?

The music videos main purpose is to PROMOTE the single, the album where their single is from and, of course, the artist. To do this, a music video has to:

    1.      Sell the song in a way that the audience can remember the song from the video.
    2.      To provide the viewer with with a better understanding of the song so they engage with it both visually and audibly (this is achieved through a performance or a 'story telling').
    3.      To entertain the viewer by highlighting the talents of the artist - dancing, singing, performing and physical appearance.
The music video could be considered to be a marketing tool that is used as a visual aid to help sell the artist, their brand and their products (singles/albums/gigs) to a wide an audience as possible.
