Research for Music Video: Mainstream or Independent

This is some research of a mainstream and independent band or artist.
The two artists I looked at were:

  • Marina and the Diamonds (INDEPENDENT)
  • Florence and the Machine (MAINSTREAM)
MARINA AND THE DIAMONDS:

Label: Neon Gold
Artists that are from the same label: Charli XCX, Tove Lo and St Lucia
Target Audience: Teenage girls; songs such as 'Teenage Idle' is more likely to appeal to this kind of group.
Merchandises fans can get: T-shirts/jumpers, necklace, poster of artist, the artist's current album
How you can purchase their music: A download section on the website, featuring free tracks.
How did she become famous: After attending four different universities and doing a music course, Marina decided she wanted to enter the music industry on her own

FLORENCE AND THE MACHINE

Label: Island Records
Artists from the same label: John Newman, Passenger and Jessie J
Target Audience: Young people between the ages of 14-20; known to have a edgy, hippy look which will appeal the younger generation.
Merchandisers fans can get: Necklaces, bracelets, earrings, posters, all of the band's albums, tickets for tours (if going)
How you can get their music: You can download or order all their albums
How did she become famous: In 2006, Florence was to open up for a club, Soho Revue Bar.

1) What is the appeal of Independent or Mainstream bands for audiences - why might an audience be attracted to one rather than the other?
You can say that audiences are more likely to find mainstream artists/bands more appealing simply because they are exposed to them a lot more; more likely to be seen on chat shows, award shows etc. This sort of drives the audience to want to know about those mainstream artists and what they are all about.

2) How does the band's status as mainstream or independent affect the music video produced?
With mainstream music videos, they would usually featured things that the artist and their team will think will help to promote their album and themselves. However, independent music videos are more likely to be more creative as the artist will more likely to have more freedom on what they would they like in their video .

3) Which one appeals to you more and why?
I personally enjoy independent artists/bands more because I like the idea of coming across artists my friends probably have no idea about.

Since the AS year i have improved in the following ways:

RESEARCH - Synergy Activity Homework

                               Synergy

What is synergy?
In simple terms synergy means working together.

Synergy is used to link promotional products together that relate to the same product. It helps the audience understand the products are linked together.
below are some examples of synergy in music products.

The first image is a poster of Jay Sean's album called "all or nothing".

This is his album cover:

I can see that both promotional products have a lot in similarity in order to portray synergy, they both use the same image of Jay Sean and clearly display the chain he is wearing which shows which genre he belongs to.

RESEARCH - Lip Sync Tutorial

In the Lip Sync Tutorial we were taught how to edit videos and make sure the lip syncing is perfect and not noticeable. Powered by emaze

RESEARCH - Group Costume, Setting And Prop

The prop we will be using in our music video is red lipstick, the reason we are using red lipstick is because it will help the audience get a glimpse of what our artist likes, the red lipstick shows she is bubbly and likes to meet new people.

RESEARCH - Review On Previous Student Video

The link to the previous student video i will be reviewing is :https://vimeo.com/2408222

The video above was created by Sabien Flint, Jayden Murphy, Tenica Achord-Green, Michael Sintim

I will be showing screenshots and talking about what features i like from the video and which features i think doesn't really go well with the video.

Here is the first screenshot,i like the fact that there location gives the audience a hint of what the genre of their music video is, you can see there is street art which shows the genre is either rap or RnB. The street art is also very colourful and nice to look at which makes it really easy to understand the context of the music video,Although it cant be seen in the screenshot,in this video we can see that the main artist uses his hands to express his lyrics which make it easy for the audience to imagine the things he is rapping about.
Here is the next screenshot...

In this screenshot we can see the skate park with the artist doing skills on a bike, this setting creates a good impression of the artist as it helps the audience imagine the life he must have gone through and the hard work he has put in to come to the stage he is now, this gives it a realistic effect.

This is the third screenshot..

The third screenshot is a student reading his worksheets, personally i think that it looks unrealistic and doesnt match the lyrics or the story behind the music video,to improve this i would have created a classroom setting with more students to show that it is a school enviroment, this would have been more realistic and made the video actually look like theres a student.

here is the fourth screenshot..

This is a screenshot showing a student with a watch which is supposed to show that he is looking at the time aswell as showing the audience what the time is,i feel as if this has nothing to do with the video and is pointless therefore it doesnt go well with the rest of the video.
