Research for Music Video: Carol Vernallis Research

The following clip is just a short summary of Vernaillis' work and what it was all about, enjoy!

The main points of her observations are:

  • The idea of 'continuity' is usually broken simply because it is used to catch the audience's attention.
  • Obvious edits are used to capture the audience's attention e.g. special effects, filter etc.
  • Edits such as jump cuts are used often.
  • To give the video a structure, a master shot (base track) is normally used.
  • It is not out of the ordinary if the camera appears to be moving in time of the music

Here are examples of some of the edits she was able to identify :

The following is from the song 'King of Fall' by The Weeknd.

1) Slow Motion

And here's the video...

The following is from the video 'Wonderful' by British artist, Angel.

2) Jump Cuts

And here's the video...

The next video is from "Don't Judge Me" by Chris Brown.

3) Obvious edits: CGI

And the video:

The following is from the video 'Crazy Stupid Love' by Cheryl Cole

4) Multiple Close ups
