RESEARCH | Costume, Setting & Prop (Individual)
I looked at Rihanna's music video 'We Found Love'. Whilst watching the video I made a note of the costumes, props and setting and how it all connects back to the genre of the music video which is Pop/R&B.
Throughout the video, Rihanna had a total of 10-11 costume changes. I also noticed that whenever the beat picked up towards the chorus there was a load of fast moving images showing their 'passionate' nights and whenever Rihanna would sing "We found love" we tend to see her showing off her body as a form of seduction. A film theorist who talked about the 'male gaze' is Mulvey.
We see numerous changes in location, from their bedroom, bathroom, arcade, shop, empty field and the streets late at night. However, we see these locations through a series of jump cuts and then a close up of their face. Since the genre of the song is Pop/R&B the use of these locations is very relevant to the pop music video conventions.
Rihanna tends to use a screen projector as her main prop, as a way to show the audience how they 'fell in love' and how it all came crashing down with a series of images which portray flowers and car journeys and as the video comes to an end we see a lot of explosions and building collapses.
